The Left Hand of God
Published in Hardcover by Buccaneer Books (February, 1990)
Author: William E. Barrett
Average review score:

An excellent adventure story, even for non-believers,...
William Barrett's novels focus on men whose situations force them to reavaluate their attitudes toward the idea of belief in God. As such many readers may be hesitant to pick this book up. They really shouldn't. Regardless of whether or not you believe in God or not, "The Left Hand of God", remains a great adventure story, and while the novel lacks the brief sparks of violent action of the film version (likely added by the screenwriters to "juice up" the plot), it's enriched by Barrett's description of the protagonist's internal struggle with faith and temptation.

Well written, suspenseful and intellectually satisfying, I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys adventure stories, but prefers those with a bit more depth than the usual mass market potboiler.

high praise!
This is one of my favorites. Even though it's been written in 1950, it still gets to me.

A young pilot, Carmody, crashes in the middle of China. He's rescued by a warlord (aka bandit), and forced to be his second in command. After some time the protagonist manages to escape discuised as a priest. When he arrives at a mission, where he had hoped to end the maskerade, the people address him as a priest from the very beginnning. Since he has started out acting as a cleryman, he cannot very well drop the pretence later on, and is forced to be Gods left hand. The story tells of the internal changes of the ex-bandit, ex-pilot working and living as a priest, rediscovering the believes of his childhood. And then the warlord arrives to reclaim his man ...

It's a wonderful composed story, with a high pace, tension, old fassioned adventure, but also introspection, humor, tenderness, and philosophy about the nature of man.

The Left Hand of God: A Biography of the Holy Spirit
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (10 November, 1998)
Authors: Adolf Holl and John Cullen
Average review score:

Over the Face of the Waters
Holl's brilliantly written masterpiece surveys the history of those who were convinced they were inspired directly by God, only to clash with established religion. Holl looks at Gnostics, Cathars, renegade militant Anabaptists, and Pentecostals, all with superbly readable wit and touches of dry humor. This book is a golden example of theology that is fun bedtime reading as well. Interested in getting in touch with the heretics of history? There's no better selected guide.

Holl's thoughts run deep!
I first heard about Adolf Holl in the mid-70s when the controversy around his teachings spread through the Austrian media like wildfire. Occasionally, Holl was a talk-show host and guest on various Austrian programs where he communicated his deep-running thoughts. This book is certainly an interesting read as Holl researches and analyses the subject intensely. To judge if his conclusions are correct is up to the reader--some may agree and find it even inspirational, others may brush off this and that. Anyway, it sure provides plenty of ammunition for many brain-storming hours of debate, discussion and thought. Another book that I highly recommend, which was also written by an Austrian-born writer, who's become known as the theological whiz kid of our time, is a very helpful book by Dietmar Scherf "I Love Me: Avoiding and Overcoming Depression" -- also available at Amazon.

A Life in Hand Creating the Illuminated Journal
Published in Paperback by Gibbs Smith Publisher (October, 1991)
Author: Hannah Hinchman
Average review score:

Blending drawing and writing in journals
When I bought the first edition of this book several years ago, I went back and bought 6 more copies which I gave to my closest friends. Each felt as I did, that this was a profound book that stimulated creative journal keeping for inner and outer experiences to sharpen every day. I'd long looked for someone who could guide my urges to write and to draw, to stimulate me to put my observations out where I could really grasp them. Hinchman showed me the way with writing and memory exercises which I actually did and enjoyed, basic art technique, encouragement, and the idea that my scribbles and jottings could become a treasured personal record.

Essential reading for anyone who keeps a journal.
This book has created a nationwide interest in illustrated journal-keeping. It's a friendly, exquisitely illustrated volume from someone who is obviously nature-connected and literate to boot. If you like maps, natural history illustration, or if you are one of those who have always wanted to draw, but don't believe you can....this is the book for you

Loving hands : the traditional Indian art of baby massage
Published in Unknown Binding by Collins ()
Author: Frédérick Leboyer
Average review score:

Deeply moving and wonderfully inspirational book
What a beautiful book! The photographs are so telling of the love existant between mother and child. Frederick Leboyer is gifted with words and descriptions come across as simple poetry rather than dry descriptions. Here is something I wish my mother had done to me as a child. A gift I will give myself and my child when the time comes. On a side note I didn't find the exclusion of fathers massaging as being a bad thing. This is the story of Shantala and her baby. The poetic reference to death is about the death of the soul without love. Whether you are a baby or an adult the results are the same.

Beautiful photos reveal loving method for bonding with baby
Beautiful photographs set amidst poetry and simple instructions guide new parents in positioning and massaging their baby. The book conveys a sense of serenity that a parent may find through interacting with his or her child. It also discusses various oils and lotions that can be used for a smooth and soothing massage. One factor which did not allow for a 10 rating here is the lack of fathers giving infant massage. Also note that if someone wished to give this book as a gift, they should be aware that there is one poem which discusses the circle of life, including death, which can be very upsetting to some new parents. If this book has been revised by Leboyer, I would certainly look for the new; it is very difficult to find the original.

Making a Sampler Quilt: Twenty Traditional Patchwork Blocks for Both Hand and Easy Machine Techniques
Published in Hardcover by Reader's Digest Adult (February, 1997)
Author: Lynne Edwards
Average review score:

A Fantastic Find
I'd always liked the idea of making a patchwork quilt but was reluctant to make the investment in the equiptment. Lynne's book convinced me and I've never looked back. Her explanations are crystal clear and the pictures accompanying every block show what you are aiming for. I can't wait until her next book is published!

Sampler quilts from an English point of view
This book was based on classes Ms. Edwards taught in England. Her students produced some stunning work. Excellent instructions and lovely photographs compliment the text. A must if you love sampler quilts and enjoy working with Liberty-style prints and colors.

Making Big Words: Multilevel, Hands-On Spelling and Phonics Activities
Published in Paperback by Good Apple (June, 1994)
Authors: Patricia M. Cunningham and Dorothy P. Hall
Average review score:

Older struggling readers
I teach Title 1 disadvantaged reading students, most are learning English as a second language. I did a word a day with my 6th, 7th , and 8th graders. The making words lessons allowed me to introduce vocabulary, point out spelling patterns, talk about vowel variances, and talk about how our words are made up. I asked them to write the words as well as manipulate the letters. Sometimes, I asked them to group the words if there were several words with the same spelling pattern.

Great book for Phonics & Spelling Gr.3-5
This is a great how-to book for one specific phonics & spelling teaching strategy. It has made a big difference in my third graders ability to sound out unknown words and incorporate their knowledge of spelling patterns. Making Words is geared for K-3rd. Making Big Words is for 3rd thru 5th graders. It's a hands-on approach and it is very adaptable. You can do it just as suggested or adjust it to your students' particular need. It includes hundreds of lessons. It can also be used in coordination with thematic units that you may be using in your room. A great resource. Worth every penny. I just love Patricia Cunningham!

The Making of My Special Hand: Madison's Story
Published in Hardcover by Peachtree Publishers (February, 2000)
Authors: Jamee Riggio Heelan and Nicola Simmonds
Average review score:

A Must For Parents and Teachers!
My son was born without his right hand. This book details everything we went through getting his prosthetic. He is only 15 months old, but it is a great book to read to his four year old brother so he can understand and feel a part of what is happening. I plan on keeping this book around to present to my son's teachers to use as an aid in the classroom. The story is very easy for a child to understand, but also detailed enough that I had my family read it to see exactly how the process works. The pictures are amazing--combining real photos with drawings. Very unique. This is the only book of it's kind. I am gratefull someone is finally taking notice of upper limb differences and offering support to families.

A clear insructive book for kids
I think this is a great book for kids to read with a grownup that can explain what is happening on the pictures. It helpes de-dramatize physical disbility in a natural way. Step by step description of how the doctor makes "Madisons very special hand" are very good. I would definitely like to recommend this to anyone that's working with or having children on their own.

Making Puppets Come Alive: How to Learn and Teach Hand Puppetry (Dover Craft Books)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (February, 1997)
Authors: Larry Engler and Carol Fijan
Average review score:

Making Puppets Come Alive
A very comprehensive explanation of one of the best (if not the best) hand puppet manipulation systems in puppet theatre. Plenty of photos to guide and clear text.

Puppets are actors!
This is a great book for people who want to teach classes on how to work with hand puppets or want to improve their own puppetry skills. The focus is on hands-on manipulation of the puppets. (I am going to use it as the basis of a workshop with a theatrical group.)

It gives an overall curriculum, well illustrated and explained, for making your puppets come alive. For example, it breaks the movements down into finger, wrist, and arm movements. It gives exercises for creating puppet voices, working with props, and improvisation.

I've been looking for a book like this: so many of them are just about making the puppets, or the overall setup of a puppet theater. This may be a one-of-a-kind. Puppets are actors, and this book is a great actor's manual!

Making Your Own Paper
Published in Hardcover by New Holland Publishers (UK) Ltd (30 June, 1991)
Authors: Marianne Saddington and Joan Espi
Average review score:

Easy and Practical!!
I had a summer design class and since the class was so condensed, we designed and constructed projects on a daily basis. For my final project, I had to construct a book. I only had 2 days to do it and since I knew I wanted to make my own papers, I needed some direction. I used this wonderful book and not only did it have very clear directions with concise illustrations, the supplies needed were on a very practical level. That means I didn't have to purchase extra supplies I probably would never use again. My book turned out so beautiful, I got an A+! I now make papers as a hobby and I owe it all to this great book.

Making Your Own Paper really works!
I loved this book! I am a calligrapher and amateur bookmaker, and found this to be a valuable addition to my library. The pictures and text instructions are clear, and the projects were interesting and fun. Projects included cards, gift boxes, and mobiles, as well as some more advanced craft techniques. The author focuses on easy-to-obtain equipment and materials, making this a good choice for beginners like me. I also found it a good volume for sparking my brain when my creativity flagged.
